DAVIE, Fla. (AP) - Miami Dolphins rookie Manuel Wright apparently is having a difficult time adjusting to the NFL, and was in tears Tuesday.

The 6-foot-6, 290-pound defensive tackle from Southern California - the only pick in this month's supplemental draft - broke down during an on-field workout session.
Dolphins coach Nick Saban appeared to be shouting, or at least talking very sternly, to Wright, who was later seen walking off the field, escorted by a member of the team's staff, and lifting the front of his shirt to wipe away tears.

Exactly what Saban said that upset Wright was unclear. Team policy does not allow reporters access to players following a midday interview period.

"As you well know, young players need to develop the kind of mental toughness and attitude that they need to be professionals," Saban said. "So we are trying to help him with that, too, which may be why we need to get on him a little at times."

Wright was eligible for the supplemental draft because he is three years out of high school. As a sophomore at USC last season, he had 23 tackles, including six for losses, and recovered two fumbles.

Saban said the rookie has struggled a bit so far with muscle soreness and other issues, and believes Wright is "probably not in as good of shape as he needs to be in."

"I got on him about what we wanted him to try to do at least today, to try and work himself through it, and he responded well to it," Saban said.

I'm not surprised. Rumor has it that Saban made a few LSU players cry during his LSU days. It is unclear as to who those players are, but I have a feeling the names didn't include Bradie James, Spears or Peterman.

A Commanders fan on another site claims he was there and the story is a crock. He said the kid was wiping sweat from his face right after Saban yelled at him and some local radio guy starting going on about how he was crying and it snowballed from there. It wouldn't surprise me if that's what happened.

I was thinking the same thing when I read it. I've seen countless guys getting cussed out by coaches, and I've been the target of their wrath more than a few times myself.

You're standing there with sweat dripping into your eyes, so you grab your shirt and wipe your face. No big deal.

Now I have seen guys cry though. Our head coach at Texas Southern when I was there back in the '80's, could drive guys to tears without raising his voice or uttering any blue words. He could be absolutely vicious.

This brings back bad memories from when I was a TE in highschool. One of our linebackers could never get past me when he blitzed, so after a rip job from the coach, he decided to throw dirt in my face. Sure enough, I was blinded and missed the block, coach yells, I am wiping my eyes and am in agony and the rest of the team from a distance thinks I am crying from the coach screaming at me, so I have to take their crap for the rest of the year.

The next time he was anywhere near me i would have grabbed his facemask, gave it a good twist and tossed him to the ground by it, regardless of whether the play was anywhere near him or not.

If you would have got up and knocked his dick in the dirt, that probably wouldn't have played out that way. Course you probably would have had to run Arkansas till you puked up enough retrobution but it probably would have been worth it.

Whether the story is factual or not, Saban will do the Parcells Tree proud.

He quickly ticked off the Miami media with even tighter control on the flow of info then even Bill, Mumbles, and Coughlin. His pcs have already gone confrontational. He's yet another "Parcells without the personality" that the press can't hack.

If he didn't make this kid cry, he will another, and soon.

Mort didn't sound very surprised.....
----------

Scott (NJ): What do you make of Manuel Wright's reported crying at training camp? One-time thing? Immaturity? Something else?

Chris Mortensen: (11:08 AM ET ) I was told quite reliably by people I know at Southern Cal that Wright was considered very immature. He will have to grow up in a hurry. He tried to bascially sit out a practice because his back was feeling a little tight. Saban wasn't buying it

Like WG said, he wasn't even getting hit when this happened...

I'm sure he would have taken Parcells coaching very well. ;)
