Saban on hot mic calling MLaw a reach

https://www.nbcsports.com/nfl/profo...e-pick-a-reach-on-hot-mic-changes-tune-on-air

So, apparently, Saban didn't consider this guy a first round pick and thought he would be a day 2 sleeper. But, what does the GOAT know?
I think most thought there was maybe a dozen first rnd graded players so I don’t see it a reach to take a guy with a second round grade in the late first round since you might not get them trading down or be able to trade down. But how can it be that much of a reach, and be a sleeper in next rnd

I said it in the live draft thread and I’ll say it now, he was a reach. I hear a lot of people saying he was a wanted prospect at the end of the first, personally I haven’t seen that or read that anywhere. I would think if 4 teams were eying him at the end of the first 2-3 legit big name sources would have said at least something about it.

I read late riser… why a late riser? Combine numbers. He performed pretty well in the underwear olympics and now we’re really projecting what he might be. Remember when Byron Jones blew up the underwear olympics. Me too, good times.

There are many guys that were “late risers” because of their combine number and absolutely flopped. What you put on tape during the season is what you are. 40 times and combine numbers get you Ted Ginn instead of Jerry Rice.

We traded back once, honestly I would have traded back as many more times as I could or just moved back more and tried to get 2nd round capital. Maybe a move with the jets who had multiple 2nds. I was a big fan of the second round depth.

It could have been worse, but everyone rating our draft grade an A are not doing it because of Lawrence…

He didn't say next round, he said next day. Maybe he had him going in the 3rd.

I guess you didnt read that the whiners wanted him at 27. I also read that three other teams would have taken him after the boys in the first

You also may have missed that the cowboys were trying to trade down again but couldn’t find a trade partner.

Take it with a grain of salt since we don’t know anything for sure.

Heard 4 teams wanted him.

Heck that’s who I wanted.

Hes a Khalil Mack starter kit.

The tape is pretty good & the athleticism is off the charts.

If you can’t coach this guy up to be decent then you suck at your job.

I didn’t… not saying it wasn’t written but if anyone has anything showing Shefter or Jay Glazer or anybody relevant saying Lawrence is looking like a lock in the 1st for multiple teams post it. I’d feel better for reading 2-3 valid reports.

Also did not see anything about another trade back but I know the Bills traded back 3 times so their had to be some market.

He does for college but he never proven it in the NFL.
Well, who we dealing with on draft? College players. Saban isn't so far removed from coaching. He probably recruited a ton of the guys drafted.

I get he was never proven in the NFL. That doesn't make him a JAG. Jimmy Johnson couldn't win in Miami either and posted an 8-24 record his first 2 yers in the NFL.

There is a whole back story to both coaches and why they could not succeed there. There cowboy fans on this board who trolled Jimmy being inducted into the HOF bc of what happened in Miami.

Eh, he didn't say anything much different, just with a more positive-ish tone. He said "sleeper for tomorrow" meaning he was taken in the 1st when expected to be taken in the 2nd or 3rd. That's a nicer way of saying reach. It's not inconsistent.
That’s fake. Keep the same energy.

yes or no.......or stop yappin.
No. Absolutely not. He's always been a great coach. But, like Jimmy Johnson who started his NFL career 8-24, Saban couldn't win in the NFL without roster control and a QB. Nick didn't have a Hershel Walker to cash in or an owner who gave him carte' blanche to makeover the roster. So, he did the only sane thing he could do. He took a better job at Alabama.

You don't seem to know anything so it's hard to have a nuanced conversation with you.

You chose to make this trashy thread. You deserve the truth

Um, the post Gene Stallings "pre" Saban era is not looked upon as the best college football job years.

Now "after" and leading all the way up to Saban's retirement, then yes.

The current iteration under DeBoer is far from perceived as the best college job either.

Just sayin.

Now Saban sucks because he was thought one of our picks was a reach.
He has an opinion just as much as the ones who like him. Because it's Saban, it's worth noting, but doesn't necessarily mean it will be right.

Saban is probably right. He could have been picked up later. But, we didn't have a later pick. And, getting him at 23 instead of 20 was HUGE. Two extra 4th round picks included.

I'm definitely not a scout. So, my opinion is based on what I read online and watch on TV.

I'm really hopeful and encouraged by this draft as a whole.

By the time the draft got to pick 23, everyone left was a second round player taken in round 1.
