The Dallas Cowboys placed defensive end Ben Bass on injured reserve Friday, ending the Texas A&M product’s season one day after he suffered a dislocated shoulder in practice and further thinning the defensive line.
Bass is the second defensive end the club has lost for the year. Tyrone Crawford, another second-year player, tore an Achilles tendon during the first practice of training camp.
The Cowboys all but ruled out defensive end Anthony Spencer for Sunday night’s season opener against the New York Giants by listing him as doubtful in their official injury report Friday. Spencer hasn’t practice since undergoing knee surgery July 25.
Coach Jason Garrett said at his news conference Friday morning he did not think Bass’ injury was season-ending, but the Cowboys needed his roster spot to re-sign defensive end Jerome Long, who was cut at the end of training camp.
In addition to Bass and Crawford, the Cowboys are without four-time Pro Bowl defensive tackle Jay Ratliff (groin, hamstring) for at least six weeks.
The injuries forced the team to trade for two defensive ends this week: Edgar Jones from Kansas City and Caesar Rayford from Indianapolis.
In addition to Bass, Dallas ruled out running back Lance Dunbar (foot) and safety/special teams stalwart Danny McCray (hamstring).
Left guard Ron Leary (knee) is probable.
Waters status: With six-time Pro Bowler Brian Waters still learning the offense and trying to get into shape, the Cowboys are expected to start Mackenzy Bernadeau at right guard.
But Waters, 36, could be active Sunday night if the coaches believe he’s knocked off enough rust. Waters, who was signed Tuesday, sat out last season after earning a trip to the Pro Bowl as a member of New England’s Super Bowl team in 2011.
“I’m still working, still progressing,” Waters told reporters Friday. “I’m going to wait and see what the coaches say.”
Celebrity watch: The huge crowd expected Sunday night at AT&T Stadium will include several celebrities, owner Jerry Jones announced on his radio show Friday morning.
Speaking on Dallas’ KRLD-FM, Jones suggested he’ll be rubbing elbows with Miami Heat superstar LeBron James, Los Angeles Clippers point guard Chris Paul, New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie and former New York City mayor Rudy Guiliani.
“I hope to see LeBron,” Jones said. “I just wish I could suit him out.”
Asked what position, Jones said, “Tight end.”
James, Paul and Christie are all big Cowboys fans. Jones said Guiliani, though, will be pulling for the Giants.
