DALLAS – Cowboys receiver Dez Bryant said Monday he regrets heading to the locker room with 1:21 left in Sunday’s 37-36 loss to Green Bay.
Bryant made his early exit after an interception thrown by Tony Romo allowed the Packers to run out the clock. He said the reason he left the field was that he didn’t want to show his emotions on the sideline.
After reaching the locker room, Bryant said he dealt with the gut-wrenching loss with tears. The Cowboys blew a 23-point third quarter lead in falling to 7-7.
“I was wrong,” Bryant told the Dallas Morning News during a visit to Cook Children’s Hospital Medical Center in Fort Worth. “But I wasn’t looking at it in that kind of way. It didn’t have anything to do with my teammates. I just couldn’t watch Green Bay kneel it down after a loss like that.”
Bryant said the bottom line was he was simply was emotional.
“I cried when I got into the locker room, and I didn’t want to show that obviously on the sideline,” Bryant said. “I’m a team guy. I extremely, extremely apologize for leaving, but my teammates and coaches understand. I’m a very emotional player and we didn’t finish. It had nothing to do with my teammates. We fought. I couldn’t watch Green Bay kneel that ball down.”
Despite the embarrassing loss, the Cowboys can clinch their first trip to the playoffs since 2009 by winning their final two games. Dallas plays at Washington (3-11) on Sunday and closes the regular season hosting NFC-East leading Philadelphia (8-6) on Dec. 29.
“Of course, it’s disappointing and everybody is going to be frustrated about the way that we lost, but at the end of the day, we still have a chance,” Bryant said.
