IRVING – Brandon Carr proudly wore red his first four NFL seasons, but he’s all about blue these days.
“It’s special to go back,” the Dallas Cowboys cornerback said, referring to this weekend’s game at Kansas City, which will mark the first time he’s set foot in the city since leaving the Chiefs in March 2012 to accept a five-year, $50.1 million contract from Jerry Jones.
“But I’m a Cowboy now. Now it’s time to represent the star.”
Whatever emotions Carr will experience during his return to Arrowhead Stadium, they’ll take a backseat to him doing everything he can to ensure the Cowboys start 2-0 for the first time since 2008.
“I don’t know how it’s going to feel,” Carr said. “I may have some goose bumps and chills going in there, but it’s a business trip. I’m going there with the Cowboys. We’re going to take care of business.
“…Shaking hands can happen after the game. While those 60 minutes are in play, it’s going to be a dog fight.”
The Chiefs (1-0) drafted Carr in the fifth round in 2008 out of Grand Valley State. From that modest entry into the NFL, he became a steal for Kansas City, starting all 64 games and posting a team-high four interceptions in 2011.
Last season, he led the Cowboys with three interceptions and 11 pass breakups. Since
coming to Dallas, he’s returned two picks for touchdowns, including a 49-yarder that sealed the 36-31 win over the New York Giants in the season opener.
“Brandon’s really stepped up,” defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said. “I wasn’t here last year, but he played good last year. He’s a leader and he really played well last week. Brandon is a big part of our defense.”
The same was true in Kansas City, where fans have a reputation for loyalty.
“Whether they cheer or boo, I’m locked in and ready for this 60-minute battle,” Carr said. “Hopefully, they give me some cheers.
“But if not, hey, we’re going to try to win a ball game. That’s all that matters.”
Injury report: One day after he practiced for the first time since undergoing knee surgery July 25, Anthony Spencer had the day off Thursday as a scheduled part of his rehab…Tony Romo (ribs), Lance Dunbar (foot), Danny McCray (hamstring) had full participation, while Morris Claiborne (shoulder) was limited. Ernie Sims (groin) also sat out.
