SAN ANTONIO – The Dallas Cowboys have created $10 million worth of salary cap space by reportedly restructuring the contract of high-priced quarterback Tony Romo.
ESPNDallas.com reported Tuesday morning the Cowboys converted $12.5 million of Romo’s base salary to bonus for the purpose of proration. That move, coupled with the restructuring of the contracts of linebacker Sean Lee and cornerback Orlando Scandrick, places the club within $1 million of the 2014 NFL salary cap of $133 million.
Dallas can get under the cap by making other moves. The Cowboys reportedly are considering making center/guard Phil Costa a cap casualty.
The team also has to make decisions regarding the future of two aging, injury-prone veterans: wide receiver Miles Austin and defensive end DeMarcus Ware.
