NEW ORLEANS – For a change tonight, Dallas’ Jason Witten won’t be the best tight end on the field.
That distinction belongs to New Orleans’ Jimmy Graham, the 6-foot-7, 265-pound former basketball player with 4.5 speed who ranks ninth in the NFL with 49 receptions for 746 yards with 10 touchdowns, numbers that put him on pace to set league tight end records for both yards and TDs.
The Cowboys have been tight-lipped about how they plan to defend Graham, but many observers the task will be assigned to cornerback Brandon Carr. No matter what its strategy is, Dallas must limit Graham, who has received 23 percent of the passes Drew Brees has attempted this season and has TD catches of 56, 51 and 43 yards.
“If we want to win, we are going to have to find a way to stop him,” Cowboys linebacker Sean Lee said in an interview with NBC that will air before the game.
Lee, though, offered no specifics as to how Dallas plans to “stop” Graham.
“It’s going to be a group effort,” Lee said. “The guy is unbelievable. He is extremely fast, he runs great routes and is huge. We are all going to have to rally around him. Everybody is going to share the challenge.”
