SAN ANTONIO – The Dallas Cowboys finally bagged a big one in free agency.

Desperate for a pass rusher after cutting ties with franchise sacks leader DeMarcus Ware and losing 2012 sacks leader Jason Hatcher to the Washington Commanders, the Cowboys agreed to a deal with Henry Melton, who earned a Pro Bowl berth in 2012 with the Chicago Bears.

A Texas-ex who entered the NFL as a fourth-round pick of the Bears in 2010, Melton chose the Cowboys over the Minnesota Vikings, Seattle Seahawks and the St. Louis Rams. He made it clear Dallas was his choice via Twitter after reportedly agreeing to a one-year deal with a club-option for three more.

“Thanks you Chicago for the best 5 years of my life!” he wrote. “…I can’t wait to begin the next chapter of my life…With a star on my helmet.”

The signing is a morale booster for a club that last week cut Ware, who signed with the Denver Broncos, and failed to resign Hatcher. The Cowboys had hoped to replace them with another former Bear, but Julius Peppers signed with the Green Bay Packers.

In Melton, Dallas landed a player who can replace Hatcher as the anchor of coordinator Rod Marinelli’s 4-3 Tampa 2 defense. Hatcher recorded a career-high 11 sacks last season playing the “three-technique,” which must be manned by a disruptive, penetrating force if the alignment is going to be effective.

Melton, a 27-year-old DeSoto native who grew up in Grapevine, recorded seven sacks in 2011 and six sacks in 2012 while playing for the Marinelli-coached Bears defense.
