SAN ANTONIO – If the Dallas Cowboys want to find a pass rusher in the draft to replace DeMarcus Ware, they don’t necessarily need to target one in the first round, a noted draft analyst said Thursday.

ESPN’s Mel Kiper Jr. pointed out in a conference call that several stellar edge rushers in the past decade have been selected in later rounds.

“People say you got to get pass rushers early. No, you don’t,” Kiper said. “You can find pass rushers. They tend to drop a lot further than they should. If you scout well, you can find those guys even on Day 3 of the draft.”

Kiper cited the following edge rushers as examples: Carolina’s Greg Hardy, a 2013 Pro Bowl end selected in the sixth round in 2010; free agent end Jared Allen, a five-time Pro Bowler taken in the fourth round in 2004; and Indianapolis outside linebacker Robert Mathis, a five-time Pro Bowler grabbed in the fifth round in 2003.
The Cowboys cut Ware, the club’s franchise sacks leader, in a salary cap move Tuesday and then watched the seven-time Pro Bowler sign with Denver less than 24 hours later.

Kiper’s latest mock draft has Dallas selecting Florida State defensive tackle Timmy Jernigan in the first round. He previously had the Cowboys selecting Alabama safety Ha Ha Clinton-Dix.

But Kiper said Dallas should consider drafting UCLA outside linebacker Anthony Barr should he still be available when they are on the clock. Barr played in a 3-4 alignment in college, but Kiper believes the 6-foot-5, 255-pound California native could make the transition to playing end in the Cowboys’ 4-3 Tampa 2 scheme.

“This kid has a lot of natural ability,” Kiper said of Barr, who blazed the 40-yard dash in 4.45 seconds at the Bruins’ pro day. “He’s going to get better and better. He’s deserving of going (as high as No. 10 to Detroit or No. 11 to Tennessee).”

If Barr is gone and the Cowboys take Jernigan, they could find Oregon State’s Scott Crichton, Arkansas’s Chris Smith, Louisville’s Marcus Smith, Boise State’s Demarcus Lawrence or West Texas A&M’s Ethan Westbrooks in later rounds, Kiper said.

Same could be said with the 3 tech.......wasn't Melton originally a 4th rounder?. My guess Marinelli has a few at both positions pegged in 2nd thru 4th rounds that he likes if Donald doesn't make it to us. Problem is they might not contribute as a day 1 full time starter that Donald hopefully would

Demarcus Lawrence from Boise is one possibility. Brent Urban from Virginia could be a good DT.

Crichton from Oregon State.

Although he might got top of 2nd round and possibly sneak into the tail end of the first.

Scouting and coaching is more important that spending dollars. As long as the opportunity exists to draft well and develop our young players, we're not doomed like everyone thinks.

That and the fact that we should have a pretty darn explosive offense, which nobody is remembering during this tumultuous time for the defense.

There is hope. Here is hoping (where is the praying smiley when you need it) that the scouting department and the coaches are all on the same page this time and find multiple guys that can contribute this season on both offense and defense.

This will be critical this off-season if the Cowboys expect to take a leap above mediocrity.

there are examples of stars found in every round. but the odds of it are much slimmer. more 4th round picks don't turn in solid players than 1st rnd picks. that said the de spot in this draft is not loaded with stars but does have a few guys who can rush the passer that could be gotten in the 2nd thru 4th that could do the job as a rusher which means platooning guys to get a complete pkg

OK, I am buying what Kiper is selling! Dude does this for a living. :D

Man, 2014 season is going to be awesome! Kiper's words are a soothing balm to my Jerry Jones wounds. My fears have been assuaged!

Go Cow....but...wait...we have to scout well to find them? $%#$! Knew there was a catch!

Back to ruing and hand-wringing...

yes you can but not often - and that is why they go fast usually if they have put up any kind of real numbers in decent competition.

to count on it would be STUPID.

Goes back to original theory I believe they are clearing cap space to absorb Romos contract next year and to sign our guys who need new contracts. I am really starting to believe Jones is targeting his favorite player in JFB in the first rd and then will use the 2nd and so on draft picks on defense such as DE/DL/OLB OL and maybe maybe safety. I think Jones is looking towards the future and life without Romo and not being stuck in a position like after Aikman. JMO

That's fine and I do believe that buy why Manziel? In such a copycat league why do you feel the need to possibly trade up for Manziel and lose a draft pick when you see how well guys like Russell Wilson and Kaepernick are playing and neither were 1st rounders? Even put Nick Foles in that list.

Some late round guys will high physical upside.

James Gayle 6-4 259
Larry Webster 6-6 252
Aaron Lynch 6-5 249

Lynch has terrific physical ability and looked really good in the game footage that I've seen. He has questions about his mental makeup, but he would definitely be worth a shot in the late rounds.

Lynch should be a stud but he lacks the desire to be great. And he has lost a lot of mass since leaving Notre Dame. I could not believe he weighed in at 249 lbs.

Well I guess if 3 guys out of 10 or so drafts makes it so.

Forget the likely hundred guys taken for each one above who didn't actually pan out.
