Sunday night’s Hall of Fame Game between the Cowboys and Dolphins averaged 10.1 million viewers, giving NBC a primetime victory for the night and scoring the highest rating on any night on ABC, CBS, NBC or Fox since Game 7 of the NBA Finals between the Spurs and the Heat on June 20.
The preseason opener was also No. 1 for the week in adults ages 18-34 and adults ages 25-54, key demographics for the networks. The game also drew the most viewers for an NFL preseason game since the Cowboys-Chargers on NBA drew 10.7 million on Aug. 21, 2011.
The best ratings for the Hall of Fame game were Dallas (17.0), New Orleans (15.1), Austin (12.2) and San Antonio (11.5).
“People love football,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said. “I think our country loves football. Certainly the state of Texas loves football. It has a great following. I think people were antsy to see football again, and that’s fun. It’s fun to be a part of something like that.”
