SAN ANTONIO – The Dallas Cowboys have hired Mike Pope to coach their tight ends, the club announced Wednesday.
Pope spent the past 14 seasons coaching tight ends for the New York Giants.
“Mike Pope has been one of the great coaches in this league for a long time,” Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said in a press release. “I had the good fortune of being around him for four years (with the Giants) and his influence on me has been significant. He is an outstanding person and a welcome addition to our staff.”
Pope coached Jeremy Shockey to four Pro Bowls from 2002-2006. Other tight ends to reach the Pro Bowl under Pope’s tutelage, include, Mark Bavaro, Rodney Holman (Bengals), Ben Coates (Patriots), Stephen Alexander (Commanders) and Shockey.
Pope replaces Wes Phillips, who joined the Washington Commanders this month after the Cowboys decided not to renew his contract.
