OXNARD, Calif. – The Dallas Cowboys’ shrinking defensive line took another hit Monday with the news that end Anthony Spencer could be out for a while after aggravating a bone bruise in his left leg.

Spencer said he started feeling pain during Saturday’s conditioning test. After sitting out part of Sunday’s workout, he underwent an MRI that confirmed the bruise.

“It’s concerning to me,” Spencer said. “I really don’t know what else to do, so I’m taking it day by day.”

Spencer sat out some of the offseason with a hyper-extended knee. Garrett said the Cowboys don’t think his latest injury is serious, although Spencer indicated he could be out for a while, saying his goal is to be ready for the opener against the New York Giants.

“We are always trying to evaluate the health of our players the right way,” Garrett said. “Certainly, we’ll do that with a guy like Spence who is valuable player.

“He had an outstanding year last year. He is going to be a big part of what we are doing on defense.”

The defensive line is already without end Tyrone Crawford, who is out for the season with a torn Achilles suffered Sunday, and tackle Jay Ratliff, who is on the active/physically unable to perform list with a strained hamstring also suffered during the conditioning test.

A second-year pro from Boise State, Crawford is expected to return to Dallas for surgery this week. He won’t be placed on injured reserve until Aug. 27, the deadline for teams to trim their rosters to 75 players.

“He did an outstanding job last year,” Garrett said of Crawford. “He was a different player at the end of the year than he was at the start. It was disappointing for him, but he is a guy you known will respond to this and come back.”

With Crawford and Spencer out, second 2012 fourth-round pick Kyle Wilber worked opposite Ware with the first-team Monday.

Several veteran defensive ends are on the open market, but Dallas seems intent on finding an internal replacement for Crawford.

“Injuries provide opportunity,” Garrett said. “We have a lot of young guys we want to see more of.”

That includes second-year defensive tackle Ben Bass, a Texas A&M alum who can also play end.

Second-year tight end James Hanna also joined Dallas’ long list of injured players Monday with a slight hamstring strain.
