IRVING – With defensive end Anthony Spencer’s status for the opener against the New York Giants on Sunday night uncertain, the Cowboys acquired rookie linebacker/end Caesar Rayford from the Indianapolis Colts in exchange for an undisclosed drft pick.

Rayford, 27, enters the NFL after stints in the CFL and the Arena League. In four preseason games for the Colts, the 6-foot-7, 267-pound University of Washington alumnus, recorded an NFL-high five sacks, 11 tackles and two forced fumbles.

Spencer, who notched a career-best 11 sacks last season, has been sidelined since undergoing knee surgery July 25. If he can’t play against the Giants, the Cowboys could use a defensive end-by-committee approach that could include George Selvie, Kyle Wilber, Ben Bass, Edgar Jones and possibly Rayford.

The trade was the fourth by Dallas in as many days, a spree that began on Saturday with the Cowboys sending a 2014 sixth-round pick to Kansas City in exchange for Jones and a 2014-seventh-round pick.

On Sunday, they shipped defensive end Sean Lissemore to San Diego for a seventh-round pick in 2014. On Monday, Dallas traded tight end Dante Rosario to Chicago for a conditional seventh-round pick in 2014.

Rayford fills the spot on the 53-man roster that became vacant with the Rosario trade.
