SAN ANTONIO – The Dallas Cowboys slipped under the NFL’s 2014 salary cap Friday by releasing center/guard Phil Costa and restructuring the contract of guard right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau.
Cutting Costa saved the Cowboys $1.5 million. Dallas now roughly has $2 million of cap space available for free agency, which begins Tuesday.
Within the past five days, the cash-strapped Cowboys cleared nearly $20 million to get under the $134 million cap. The club saved nearly $17 million by restructuring the contracts of linebacker Sean Lee, quarterback Tony Romo and cornerback Orlando Scandrick.
Dallas can gain more cap space by cutting aging, injury-prone wide receiver Miles Austin, an expected move that would save more than $5 million. The Cowboys also could save another $7 milllion by releasing defensive end DeMarcus Ware, whose production has dropped in his 30s largely because of nagging injuries.
The club reportedly told Ware this week it wants to keep him but only if he takes a pay cut. His base salary for 2014 is nearly $13 million.
