IRVING – Jerry Jones passed on Johnny Manziel and made a Romo-friendly pick.

With the 16th overall pick in the NFL Draft, the Dallas Cowboys selected Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin on Thursday night.

While the move stunned those who believed Jones coveted the charismatic former Texas A&M quarterback, it has the potential to solidify the Cowboys offensive line for years to come.

Martin, 6 foot 4, 308 pounds, likely will start at right guard next season, joining a unit that already has a Pro Bowl left tackle in Tyron Smith and a potential Pro Bowl center in Travis Frederick. At some point, the Cowboys could even move Martin to right tackle, a spot currently manned by veteran Doug Free.

He’s about as safe a player as there is in this draft. If you want him, you better get him early.”

The move no doubt will disappoint fans who wanted Jones to take the charismatic Manziel, who surprisingly was still available when Dallas was on the clock.

Selecting Martin is a smart move, considering Romo is coming off his second back surgery in two years and is 34.
