IRVING – Members of the Dallas Cowboys receiving corps rallied around backup quarterback Kyle Orton on Friday after hearing the news of Tony Romo’s season-ending surgery to repair a herniated disk.
“We’re very confident in Kyle,” Dez Bryant said. “It’s not a huge issue. I know in this locker room, we’ll be ready to go on Sunday.
“…Tony’s my guy. He will always be. I want him to hurry up and get well. I hope he has a speedy recovery, which I know he is. And we’re going to try to get this W for him…We’re going to go out and we’re going to lay it all out on the line and get this W for Tony.”
Most of the players in the locker room during the period open to the media were unaware Romo had surgery Friday morning for the injury the club said he suffered in last week’s win over Washington. Told of the news by the media, they all said their focus remains on beating the Eagles in Sunday’s nights playoffs-or-bust regular season finale.
“Everybody is hurt he had surgery, but we still have a game to play,” Cole Beasley said. “Our main focus is on what it should be, playing the Eagles.”
Dwayne Harris agreed.
“Tony has stuff going on with him, but we got to win this game,” Harris said.
Romo completes his eighth season as a starter among the NFL’s passing leaders after completing 342 of his 535 passes (63.9 percent) for 3,828 yards with 31 touchdowns and 10 interceptions for a 96.7 rating.
“You’d give anything for him to be there, but this is pro football,” Jason Witten said. “These things come up…Obviously, we need him to get healthy for next season. But we have a lot of confidence in Kyle.
“…It’s obviously pretty tough on (Romo) and rightfully so. He loves the game, man.”
