SAN ANTONIO – It’s going to be bitterly cold Monday night in Chicago, and the Bears rank last in the league in defending the run, yielding an average of 153.6 yards on the ground per game.
Add it all up, and you’ve got a Cowboys game plan that should center on feeding the ball to DeMarco Murray.
Dallas is near the bottom of the NFL in rush offense, averaging just 85.1 yards per game. But with the Bears struggling to stop the run and recently signed fullback Tyler Clutts ready to help open holes, Murray should top 20 carries for just the third time this season and become the ninth back this season to rush for at least 100 yards against the Bears.
“We feel like (Clutts) can help us in some way with the physical nature of our football team,” coach Jason Garrett told reporters Friday in Irving. “When you have a true fullback, that can certainly have a positive impact on what you are trying to get done there.”
Murray had the best performances of his career as a rookie in 2011 running behind fullback Tony Fiammetta. Clutts believes he’ll be an effective blocker for Murray, especially in cold weather.
“Because when it gets cold, you tend to second-guess selling out on the contact,” Clutts told the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Especially a guy like me in my position, I’ve got to control that instinct and turn it on even more because the guy may be hesitating on the other side.”
