ARLINGTON – On a night when the offense produced a season-low 213 total yards, the defense answered the call with an inspired effort. And it was the much-maligned secondary that led the way.
Cornerback Brandon Carr had his best game of the season in the 31-16 win over Washington Sunday night, registering three pass breakups and six tackles, including one for a loss.
Corner Orlando Scandrick intercepted a Robert Griffin III pass in the end zone in the fourth quarter and had two breakups and four stops. Corner Mo Claiborne had three breakups and three tackles.
“Our corners played lights out,” Dallas defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said. “They really played outstanding. That was their best game against good wide receivers.”
Said Griffin, who finished with 246 yards passing on 19-of-39 accuracy for a passer rating of just 58.3, “They definitely locked on to some of our receiving threats, which made it difficult in the passing game.”
There were plenty of other defensive stalwarts as the unit bounced back from back-to-back horrendous efforts. In losing to San Diego and Denver the previous two weeks, the Cowboys gave up a combined 81 points and more than 1,000 yards while blowing double-digit leads in each game.
Defensive tackle Jason Hatcher had two sacks, a tackle for a loss, two quarterback hits and a forced fumble, defensive end Kyle Wilber forced and recovered a fumble that led to a touchdown and middle linebacker Sean Lee had a game-high 10 tackles, a quarterback hit and pass breakup.
And all of it happened with defensive end DeMarcus Ware on the sideline in the second half. Ware suffered a right quadriceps injury in the second quarter and didn’t return.
“That (defensive) front – I was concerned as we went into the third quarter there about them getting tired and not getting a lot of substitutions there,” Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said. “But they didn’t tire and they just really kept coming. (Defensive line coach) Rod (Marinelli) obviously got them very motivated and they really played a really outstanding game for us.”
