Running back Lance Dunbar sprained his left foot in the 12-7 loss to Arizona on Saturday, an injury that threatens his availability for the Sept. 8 season opener and beyond.

DallasCowboys.com reported that the timetable for Dunbar’s return is three to four weeks.

Last season, running back DeMarco Murray missed six games because of a sprained foot.

Dunbar wore a protective boot to practice Monday morning. The second-year player from North Texas was expected to be the club’s third-down back.

Dunbar fumbled at the end of a 43-yard catch and run in the first half against the Cardinals. He returned to the game and there was no mention in the locker room afterward of him suffering an injury.

On a positive injury note, guards Kevin Kowalski (knee) and Ray Dominguez (shoulder) returned to practice.

Dunbar’s injury likely solidifies a roster spot for fifth-round running back Joseph Randle. It also puts backup running back Phillip Tanner in better position to make the team.
