ARLINGTON – The Dallas Cowboys drafted San Diego State tight end Gavin Escobar in the second round in April envisioning him as a red zone weapon.
Escobar has shown flashes of fulfilling that promise, but the rookie blew an opportunity Thursday night to score his second touchdown of the preseason when he failed to keep his right foot in bounds while catching a fade in the left corner of the end zone from Alex Tanney in the second quarter.
“I caught it,” Escobar said, “and I looked down to try and keep my feet in. I kind of was hoping (the ref) didn’t see it because I could kind of tell my right foot was a little bit in the white. Tanney made a good play on the run. It was a good ball. I’ve just got to keep my feet in.”
Escobar finished with five catches for 29 yards against the Texans, who pounded the Cowboys, 24-6. Two plays after Escobar failed to score, Dan Bailey kicked a 38-yard field goal to pull Dallas within 7-3.
“It was like an inch short or an inch too shy,” Escobar said. “I’ve got to get them in. I’ll work on it and clean it up.”
