CANTON, Ohio – Plenty of eyes will be on Cowboys running back Lance Dunbar in the preseason opener Sunday night after an impressive two weeks of training camp for the second-year player.
Day after day in Oxnard, Dunbar showed off his skills in impressive style, leading coach Jason Garrett to heap praise on the 5-foot-8, 188-pound North Texas alumnus, who should see plenty of action against the Miami Dolphins with DeMarco Murray expected to sit this one out along with most of the veteran starters.
“He gets better, really, every single day and it really goes to the kind of young man he is, how important it is to him,” Garrett said. “He just works at it, and he has great juice, has a bounce in his step all the time, a smile on his face. He loves to play football.”
“He’s a little guy, but he’s quick, explosive, knows what to do and he loves playing football and you see it every day. He’s gotten better and better and better. He works really hard at his craft. He’s a very good receiver and he’s got good vision as a runner.”
But it’s his skills as a receiver that really stand out, Garrett said.
“He’s a very good pass receiver. He really is,” the coach said. “He just has a good understanding, for a young player, he has a really good understanding of how to release, how to work guys, he understands leverage, angles, he’s quick and explosive and can separate really well as a route runner, and we work very hard with our backs on running routes well.”
On the negative side of the ledger, there’s Dunbar’s size.
“His biggest issue is he’s not a real big guy and sometimes that causes problems in pass protection,” Garrett said. “But, again, he sticks his nose in there and blocks the guy. He fights hard and he’s really getting better before our eyes. He’s a good football player.”
