The Cowboys on Monday afternoon announced the signing of fifth-round running back Joseph Randle.

Randle received a four-year deal worth $2.29 million, according to the Dallas Morning News’s David Moore via Twitter. He joins sixth-round linebacker DeVonte Holloman as the only two members of the seven-player draft class to sign so far.

Randle, a former Oklahoma State standout who rushed for 38 touchdowns over the last two seasons, was limited at rookie minicamp over the weekend because of a cast to protect his surgically repaired right thumb.

“I think he is very into it mentally,” running backs coach Gary Brown said when asked it if it was tough to keep Randle out of the action. “He wants to be out there. His drive, his determination, you’ve got to hold him back. So, that’s a good thing. Hopefully, when he gets his cast off, he will be ready to go. He’ll be in great shape. We’ll be ready to see what he can.”

Brown said he is glad the Cowboys grabbed Randle but was at a loss to explain why nine other backs were drafted before him.

“It’s a lottery,” Brown said of the draft. “I don’t know why Terrell Davis slipped to the sixth and he had a 2,000-yard season. You don’t know why Arian Foster never got drafted. Things just happen. This whole draft thing, it ain’t a perfect science. We make mistakes, so that’s what it is.”
