With the Cowboys wanting to take an extended look at fifth-round running back Joseph Randle, backup Phillip Tanner didn’t play in Saturday’s 12-7 loss at Arizona.
“We wanted to see Joseph Randle,” Garrett said at a news conference in Irving. “We wanted to hand Joseph Randle the ball and see what he was doing. Phillips has done a real nice job for us, both on offense and special teams. We’ve seen him for the last couple, three years and we wanted to give the young guy a chance to play.”
Tanner told reporters he was OK with the decision.
“I’m a company guy,” ESPNDallas.com quoted him as saying.

“Phillip always responds the right way to stuff,” the coach said at a news conference in Irving. “Whether he gets an opportunity or doesn’t get an opportunity, he always seems to make the most of it. Those are the kind of guys you want on your team.”
