OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys coach Jason Garrett is trying something new in an effort to reduce pre-snap penalties.

When a player jumps before the ball is snap, the entire unit goes to the sideline rather than just the guilty party.

“One of the things we really emphasize from a coaching staff standpoint and throughout our team is the word accountability,” Garrett said. “We have to take accountability for what we’re doing. We have to hold each other accountable. We have to get better in the area of pre-snap penalties. There’s no secret to that. It’s a whole unit thing.

“The sequence right now is if the ones (the first team) jump offside or have a pre-snap penalty, the twos will go in. If the twos jump offside or have a pre-snap penalty, the threes go in. If the threes go in, the ones will go back.”

The pressure is really on the third-team Garrett said.

“If you’re a three, you don’t want that to happen,” he said with a smile. “The ones are some of the best players we have and have plenty of reps. They don’t want more reps.”
