ARLINGTON – Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett vowed to keep “banging away” in an attempt to finally get the team over the .500 hump.

The Cowboys finished 8-8 for the third straight season after losing their playoffs-or-bust season finale Sunday night 24-22 to the Philadelphia Eagles. The lost extended Dallas’ playoff drought to four seasons and left Garrett with a 29-27 record.

“You keep banging away,” he said. “You just keep banging away. There are great stories in all walks of life of people who were close, who were close, who were close, and they just kept fighting and keep battling.

“You got to be persistent. You’ve got to keep believing and some how, some way, we’ll break through.”

But will Jerry Jones give Garrett enough time to turn the corner? The owner indicated after the game he’s not ready to give up on Garrett, reminding reporters that he’s already given the coach a vote of confidence.

“Do you all remember a month ago when I was talking about Jason?” Jones said. “I didn’t see anything out here tonight that would change my mind.”

Asked if he thinks Jones will stick with him, Garrett deftly deflected the question.

“Not real concerned about that,” he said. “Just focused on doing my job.”
