SAN ANTONIO – Following the lead of owner Jerry Jones, coach Jason Garrett on Wednesday offered his support for embattled defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin.
One day after Jones said on his weekly radio show that Kiffin is the right man “to fix” the Cowboys broken defense, Garrett answered “absolutely” when asked agrees.
“We just have to go back to work,” Garrett said at a news conference in Irving. “We have to look at what happened in the ballgame. There were some technical things. There were some scheme things. We just have to make the necessary corrections. A couple of different times in the year we’ve had some bad games and games where we didn’t do what we needed to do on defense and we made the corrections and we played better. We simply have to do that again.”
The Cowboys lost 45-28 to the Bears on Monday night. Chicago gained 490 yards, notched 33 first downs, converted 8-of-11 third down opportunities and scored points eight of its nine possessions, including the first eight.
It was the fifth game this season in which Dallas has allowed 490 or more yards and 30 or more points. No other defense has allowed more than two such games this season.
The Cowboys are either last or near the bottom of the league in total defense, rush defense and pass defense. They also lead the league in first downs allowed (324).
“We have to do a better job just simply defending – defending the run, defending the pass, getting off on third down,” Garrett said. “We got them into some longer third downs at different times in the game and they consistently converted them. Obviously when you’re scoring every possession in a game, that ain’t good. So we didn’t get the job done as coaches, as players, as everybody and then we recognize that and have to do everything we can here with our players to get that fixed and get ready for the next challenge.”
