IRVING – Despite his crucial fumble late in the game, a gaffe that thwarted a comeback bid, Cowboys rookie receiver Terrance Williams received praise from coach Jason Garrett for his play in the 30-21 loss at San Diego.
Williams started his day with an early drop and finished it with a fumble at the goal line the Chargers recovered in the end zone with 2:42 left while leading by the final score.
In between, the former Baylor star caught a career-high seven passes for 71 yards.
“I thought he played very well throughout most of the game,” Garrett said. “He made a number of plays for us.”
But what about the fumble, a gaffe that had him hanging his head in the locker room afterward? Williams lost the ball while trying to extend it across the goal line.
“It was an effort play he was making, there’s no question about that,” Garrett said. “He catches it short of the goal line and he wants to get in and he extends the ball. One of those things he’s going to learn as a young player is when you’re in those situations guys are fantastic at getting the ball out. It’s a physical game and they’re going to knock the ball out, so he’ll learn from that experience.
“But to be honest with you, you want guys who it matters to them and it certainly matters to him. He wants to do well and he puts pressure on himself to do well, and that’s a good thing for a young player. We’ll continue to work with him and talk to him about going to the next play whether (the last one) was a successful or one that doesn’t go his way.”
