SAN ANTONIO – Dallas Cowboys coach Jason Garrett will have a kindred offensive spirit by his side as he fights for his job next season.

The Cowboys announced Tuesday night that Scott Linehan has joined Garrett’s staff and will call offensive plays and serve as passing game coordinator in 2014. The move gives Garrett a right-hand man who shares his offensive philosophy and systems, so much so that they often sound alike.

While working the last five years as offensive coordinator for the Detroit Lions, Linehan never grew tired of describing his play-calling philosophy as “aggressively taking what the defensive gives you.”

That same phrase has been uttered repeatedly by Garrett since he took over the Cowboys’ coaching reins from the fired Wade Phillips midway through the 2010 season.

The two also share a bond from their days as members of Nick Saban’s Miami Dolphins staff.
Linehan was offensive coordinator for the Dolphins in 2005 when he received a voice mail message from Cowboys great Troy Aikman encouraging him to hire Garrett to coach the quarterbacks. Garrett had just retired from a lengthy NFL playing career as a backup QB and was eager to start his coaching career.

“Scott, Jason Garrett is one of the smartest people I’ve ever been around,” USA Today quoted Aikman as telling Linehan. “It wouldn’t matter what business I was entering, if they said I could hire one person, Jason would be the first guy I’d hire. He always looks at the bright side of things, always finds the good in people. You’d be fortunate to have him on your staff.”

Linehan promptly hired Garrett. Now, Garrett has seemingly returned the favor after his friend got dumped by Detroit. But if Dallas doesn’t make the playoffs, their reunion will be short lived.
