IRVING – Having selected Notre Dame offensive lineman Zack Martin in the first round Thursday night, it only makes sense that the Cowboys would their attention to finding defensive help in the second and third round Friday night.

Not so fast, owner Jerry Jones said.

The Cowboys had one of the worst defenses in NFL history last season, but Garrett said the club will stick with its best-player-available philosophy.

“We’re going to go down just like we made this decision (to follow their board and draft Martin rather than reach for a defensive player),” Jones said. “We’re going to see what trades are there, and I wouldn’t want to bet a lot that we might not take an offensive player again or take an offensive player at any pick coming up.”

Coach Jason Garrett believes the defense has already been helped with the drafting of Martin, who is expected to start right away at right guard.

“We are going to have a better offensive line, a better offense and we will probably play better defense the better we play on the offensive line,” Garrett said. “We will be able to run the ball better and control the football a little more.”
