IRVING – Coach Jason Garrett was noncommittal when asked if newly signed guard Brian Waters would play Sunday when the Cowboys host the New York Giants in a primetime season opener.

“We’re focused on Wednesday,” Garrett said.

Water, 36, signed a one-year, $1.5 million deal that could balloon to $3 million should he meet incentives involving playing time. The six-time Pro Bowler worked out for the team Tuesday after chatting with Garrett and others on Monday.

“He’s a real pro,” Garrett said. “He’s played at a very high level in this league for a long time. We had conversations with him throughout training camp and we’re excited to have him on board.”

Garrett said Waters did a “good job” during his audition on a hot day.

“He still has to get himself in shape to play at this level, and that’s just natural,” Garrett said. “It’s hard to, regardless of what you are doing, it’s hard to get yourself ready and then play. So, he has worked very hard. He’s a pro, no question about that. He knows what he is doing. He learns quickly and we anticipate him really hitting the ground running and being a part of our football team here pretty soon.”

Garrett said there is “no question” the Waters signing can be viewed as a down-the-road move.

“I think you’ve got to be careful about making decisions for Week 1,” Garrett said. “It’s a 16-game season. We had an example a couple of years ago. (Wide receiver) Laurent Robinson wasn’t on our roster for the first couple of weeks, and he had a great year for us, a very productive year for us. You’re always trying to make the best decision. You’re always trying to upgrade your team, bring guys in here who can help you.”

Garrett was also non-committal about whether guard Ron Leary (knee) and defensive end
Anthony Spencer (knee) would be ready for Sunday’s game.

Garrett said Spencer would do “something” in practice Wednesday.
