IRVING – Cowboys tailback DeMarco Murray rushed for 86 yards on 14 carries in the 24-21 win over the Giants, but Jason Garrett said the performance wasn’t without its flaws.
“There were some times DeMarco needs to finish runs better, there’s no question about that,” the coach said Monday.
Murray ran out of bounds several times rather than risk contact that could have resulted in even more yardage.
“Sometimes backs do what he did yesterday,” Garrett said. “They see a certain situation a certain way and they feel like the best option is to go out of bounds. When we looked at the tape, we said, ‘You can stick your nose in there a little more.’
“It’s not cowardly. He’s the furthest thing from that.”
Murray said Garrett’s critique doesn’t bother him. He suggested he ran out of bounds only once and that it was a “good decision” at the end of a 30-yard run with a safety closing in.
“I was trapped,” he said.
Murray said the decision to run out of bounds had nothing to do with his lengthy injury history.
“You just got to be selective,” he said. “You have to be smart. …More times than not, I deliver the blow.”
Injury report: Hamstring injuries prevented cornerback Mo Claiborne and receiver/return man Dwayne Harris from practicing. They likely won’t play Thursday against Oakland.
With Claiborne ailing, Dallas re-signed corner Sterling Moore, who was cut after the preseason. To make room for Moore, tight end Andre Smith was released.
