Cowboys coach Jason Garrett said the club respects veteran guard Brandon Moore’s decision to retire rather than accept the one-year contract the club offered him.
Moore reached a verbal agreement with the club Tuesday night only to inform the team Wednesday morning that he wanted to stay with his family rather than continue to play football. The Dallas Morning News reported Moore had been offered a guaranteed $1.25 million with a $500,000 signing bonus.
“Football is one of those games if you are not completely into it, you are not 100 percent full bore, it’s a bad game to play,” Garrett said at a news conference in Oxnard, Calif.
The offensive line is depleted by injuries. Left guard Nate Livings could miss the rest of the offseason after undergoing knee surgery last week and right guard Mackenzy Bernadeau missed the first two weeks of camp with a hamstring injury.
Garrett was asked if the team still has an interest in six-time Pro Bowl guard Brian Waters, who was out of football last season after starting in 2011 for New England’s Super Bowl team. Although Garrett gushed about the 36-year-old Waters, he pointed out that there’s a big negative when it comes to signing the 13-year veteran from North Texas.
“The biggest issue with Brian right now is he hasn’t played in 18 months,” Garrett said.
