OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys coach Jason Garrett was noncommittal Saturday when asked whether quarterback Tony Romo would play in the Hall of Fame Game on Aug. 4.

Garrett told a Dallas radio station on Friday that Romo might not play against Miami in Canton, Ohio.

“It’s one of those deals where I suppose he could play five plays or whatever, but we might lean to no plays,” Garrett told KRLD-FM. “But the clock starts on our [first-teamers] in Week 2 of the preseason. So that’s not going to be Tony’s game.”

Asked Saturday about Romo’s participation in the game, Garrett said, “I really haven’t had any discussions about our playing rotation in that game. We’ll have those discussions next week. It is a bonus preseason game…I don’t anticipate our starters playing that much.”

Despite April back surgery that sidelined him for most of the preseason, Romo hasn’t missed any time in training camp. The likely scenario is that he will either play one series against the Dolphins or sit the entire game out and then play a couple of series in the second preseason game at Oakland on Aug. 4.

In other injury news, Garrett said the sprained left ankle defensive end Ben Bass suffered in Friday’s practice may not keep him out at all.

“We don’t think he has a real issue,” Garrett said. “He hurt his ankle yesterday in practice. We’ll see what his availability is for even for today and even tomorrow. Really, it’s day by day, hour by hour.”
