IRVING – The Cowboys haven’t had any luck the past two weeks throwing screen passes to rookie Terrance Williams on third-and-long in the red zone, but coach Jason Garrett doesn’t sound ready to give up on the play.

In Week 1’s 36-31 win over the New York Giants, Williams didn’t understand Tony Romo’s audible to the play, a mental bust that resulted in an interception the Giants turned into a field goal. In Week 2′s 17-16 loss to Kansas City, the Baylor alumnus made the catch, but the Chiefs dropped him for a 3-yard loss, forcing Dallas to settle for a field goal.

What happened in Kansas City wouldn’t be so bad had the Chiefs not been in man coverage against Dez Bryant, who had already caught one touchdown with a leaping grab at the back of the end zone.

“When plays don’t work, you can always go back and say, ‘Why the heck did you do that?’ ” Garrett said. “Run-and-catch plays down in the tight red zone where everybody’s in the end zone sometimes can be good plays…When the plays don’t work, I understand why people don’t like those calls, but we’re trying to get into the best plays. Sometimes they work, sometimes they don’t.”
