SAN ANTONIO – An air of uncertainty continues to permeate the Dallas Cowboys coaching staff after Jason Garrett suggested Tuesday that coordinators Bill Callahan and Monte Kiffin could have different roles next season.
One day after owner Jerry Jones indicated the club would retain the embattled assistants, the team’s head coach said staff evaluations are ongoing and that roles could change.
“Like (Jones) said, those guys are under contract,” Garrett said of Callahan and Kiffin. “We’re always trying to figure out ways to do better, and that starts with us as a coaching staff. We’ll keep looking at what everyone’s roles are and how everything settles down.”
Speaking at the Senior Bowl in Mobile, Ala., Garrett declined to say whether the roles of Callahan and Kiffin will change, the team’s web site reported.
“Those guys are under contract and we feel good about that,” DallasCowboys.com quoted Garrett as saying. “We’re always going to try to do things that are in the best interest of our football team, so we’ll keep looking at how we can be better as a staff and what roles everybody is in and what we’re asking them to do. But those guys are really good football coaches.”
Garrett said the focus at the moment is on filling two vacancies on his staff. Dallas decided last week not to renew the contracts of tight ends coach Wes Phillips, who joined the Washington Commanders, and assistant special teams coach Chris Boniol.
