DALLAS – The Cowboys haven’t notched a sack in the last six quarters and have only one over the past two games.
Coach Jason Garrett attributes those woeful numbers of the ability of San Diego’s Philip Rivers and Denver’s Peyton Manning to get rid of the ball quickly. The Cowboys (2-3) lost to the Chargers and Broncos the last two weeks to enter Sunday night’s game with Washington (1-3) with a two-game losing streek.
“Those guys are really smart, they’re also quick getting the ball out of their hand,” Garrett said. “We saw that on tape. I think Peyton Manning is the least-sacked quarterback in the history of the NFL. He has a really good feel for where the pressure is, where his quick options are and how to get the ball out of his hand. So we tried to be a little more aggressive on the back end and play more man coverage and try to eliminate some of his quick options. But still he found the good answers.”
The Cowboys failed to sack Manning in last week’s 51-48 loss.
“It’s hard on those guys to get to him,” Garrett said. “It’s been that way for a long, long time.”
The Commanders’ Robert Griffin III is also hard to sack, but it’s not because he gets rid of the ball quickly.
“A whole different deal than both of those,” Dallas defensive coordinator Monte Kiffin said. “You get to him but all of a sudden you better contain him, because just the time you’re going to get a sack, he’ll run away from you if you don’t control the pocket.”
The Commanders have yielded seven sacks this season. The Cowboys sacked Griffin four times last season in getting swept by Washignton.
“They’ve been successful on offense, and he’s done some good things offensively both from the pocket and when he’s moving,” coach Jason Garrett said. “People will say he’s not out of the pocket as much, that stuff exists on every tape I watch. They do some of the pistol stuff, some of the read-option stuff. They try to get him out of the pocket. So out of the stuff that he’s done over the course of his young career, he’s certainly doing (it) this year. He’s making a lot of plays throwing the football, I know that.”
