ARLINGTON – Cowboys undrafted rookie safety Jeff Heath just might have earned a roster spot with his fumble-producing hit on Bengals rookie wide receiver Cobi Hamilton in the third quarter.
The hit accounted for one of the four takeaways notched by the defense.
“That’s a big hit, the safety coming out of the high hole and delivering a blow like that,” said Dallas cornerback Brandon Carr, who had a fumble recovery in the first half. “It’s one of those pop plays that changes the momentum of the game and gives the ball back to us.”
Heath, an alumnus of Saginaw Valley State, is battling second-year safety Matt Johnson for a roster spot. The oft-injured Johnson has been out since suffering a foot injury during the preseason opener Aug. 4. Because of injuries, the fourth-round pick has yet to play in a regular season game.
“We have a great competition within our secondary right now,” Carr said. “We have a lot of guys stepping up each and every day, bringing their ‘A’ game, competing and dominating. We have a lot of good players right now, and it’s interesting to see what is going to happen.”
Heath wasn’t the only Cowboys safety that forced a fumble in Saturday’s 24-18 win over Cincinnati. Barry Church stripped the ball loose from receiver Marvin Jones in the first quarter at the Dallas 4-yard line and Carr recovered.
“On each of those turnovers, it’s about the guys hustling – max effort, getting to the ball and trying to work the ball out,” Carr said. “(Church) did everything we were shown in all our (film) cutups and everything we have been drilling so far. Guys hustled to the ball, and I was able to pick it up. Heath was able to do the same thing as well. It’s all about getting the population to the ball, everyone swarming and trying to pick the ball up.”
