IRVING – Oakland Raiders cornerback Mike Jenkins made reference during a conference call with the Dallas media Tuesday to a “personal vendetta” clouding his final years with the Dallas Cowboys.
Jenkins declined to elaborate.
“I’m past that,” he said. “I’m a year out of that franchise…I’m not a Dallas Cowboy, so it’s kind of pointless for me to talk about those guys.”
A first-round pick for the Cowboys in 2008, Jenkins started 48 games before the additions of cornerbacks Brandon Carr and Morris Claiborne pushed him down the depth chart. He skipped voluntary team workouts after undergoing shoulder surgery following the 2011 season and reportedly asked to be traded, a request Dallas denied.
After playing 13 games for the Cowboys in 2012, Jenkins signed as a free agent with the Raiders. In starting all 11 games for Oakland this season, he has one interception and three passes defensed.
“It was pretty bad,” Jenkins said of his shoulder. “But that’s an old story. If anything I would be mad about that situation, but that’s nothing for me to hold on to. I’ve moved on with my life. I’m happy.”
Jenkins grew defensive when he was asked if he was envious of Cowboys cornerback Orlando Scandrick, also a 2008 draft pick by Dallas, albeit a fifth rounder.
“Why would I be envious of Orlando?” Jenkins said. “That’s like one of my best friends of all off the field to this day. I would never be envious of Orlando Scandrick. First of all, I came in on top. I came in as a first-round draft pick. There’s no reason for me to be envious.”
Jenkins, who is expected to play even though he suffered a concussion in last week’s loss to Tennessee, said it will be a “great challenge” defending former teammates Dez Bryant and Miles Austin.
“I love those boys like a brother,” he said. “But once the clock starts running, there’s no family, there’s no nothing in between the lines. He’s going to try to get that ball. He’s going to try to declare punishment on me, so may the best man win. We got to get off on each other. After the play, we will pick each other up and keep going.”
Jenkins also had praise for Tony Romo, crediting the quarterback for teaching him the pro game.
“He gave me pointers on different quarterbacks, what to look for, so everything I see from Romo is beautiful. I think Romo is one of the best quarterbacks in the league.”
Extra points: The Cowboys signed linebacker Martez Wilson, a third-round pick out of Illinois by New Orleans in 2011 who was released Nov. 19 by Oakland after playing three games for the Raiders…To make room for Wilson, the Cowboys cut defensive tackle Everett Dawkins…Cleveland signed quarterback Alex Tanney off the Cowboys practice squad…Claiborne, Dwayne Harris and Sean Lee, all of whom have hamstring injuries, did not practice.
