OXNARD, Calif. – Cowboys safety Barry Church reluctantly adjusted his diet after chipping a tooth two weeks ago while eating a cherry-flavored Jolly Rancher.
The candy catastrophe led to him undergoing a root canal Monday that forced him to miss practice. He was back in action at Tuesday’s walkthrough and is expected to practice Tuesday afternoon and play in Sunday’s preseason opener against Miami at Canton, Ohio.
“I felt (pain) a little on and off, but it wasn’t nothing crazy,” Church said. “But I woke up that (Monday morning) and the pain was crazy, so I had to get it taken care of.”
When he returned from the trip to the dentist’s office, his teammates and coaches gave him the business.
“Everybody gave me grief, but I took the punches and kept going,” Church said.
The best zinger came from secondary coach Jerome Henderson, Church said.
“He told me to stop eating nasty things,” Church said.
The Ball State alumnus said the worst thing about the candy caper is the change in his diet.
“I have to lay off the candy for a while,” he said. “It sucks, but I’ll get over it…No more Jolly Ranchers. I have to stick to the soft stuff – Starburst, Skittles, stuff like that.”
