SAN ANTONIO – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones says he “loves the pain” that comes with all the criticism he receives from media and fans.
In an interview with CBS News correspondent Jan Crawford broadcast Monday, Jones admitted he listens to talk radio “more than anyone,” and that while the criticism stings, deep down, maybe he likes it.
“I think I love the pain,” Jones said, per the Fort Worth Star-Telegram. “Certainly, criticism hurts, but, boy, it fuels your ambition. It makes me think, ‘I want to show them.’ ”
The Cowboys have only one playoff win in the past 17 seasons and a 5-5 record coming out of the bye week indicates they might miss the playoffs for a fourth-straight season. But Jones said all of that doesn’t keep him away from talk radio.
“No, no. As a matter of fact, I probably listen to more talk radio than anyone,” Jones said.
Crawford asked him, “Do you really? You hear it?”
Jones replied, “I think I love the pain.”
Jones then offered a story that illustrates how he recently sought pain after a “serious” loss.
“I (getting a lot of) blood work, and they said, ‘We want to be sure and get this nurse in that really knows how to be gentle and get it done quickly on the first time,’ ” Jones said. “And I said, ‘This morning, I need one that needs to try 10 times. I want some pain…I need to cry a little bit.’ ”
