DALLAS – Sticking to a stance first issued by coach Jason Garrett, Cowboys owner Jerry Jones said Tuesday the club hasn’t ruled injured quarterback Tony Romo out of Sunday night’s playoffs-or-bust game against the Philadelphia Eagles.
Romo reportedly has a herniated disk that will need surgery to repair, a development that would place backup Kyle Orton under center against the Eagles.
But Jones said Romo is undergoing treatment with the goal of playing Sunday night.
“If treatment has the positive implications that it certainly has the chance to have, Romo should not be ruled out in any way,” Jones told Dallas’ KRLD-FM. “I won’t get into the details of the injury. But structurally if his doctor clears him and he can and its possible. If he is cleared to play he can very well play.”
Jones said Romo called him Monday morning to inform him of his prognosis.
“He was disappointed,” Jones said. “If you know Tony you can imagine what a competitor he is. He doesn’t want to miss a snap or a play. He was very disappointed for his team. He said over and over again how bad ‘I feel for you and my teammates’. He said ‘I’m going to do everything I can to get on the field. We need to beat Philadelphia.’ ”
Jones also gave Jason Garrett another vote of confidence, saying he and his staff are not coaching for their jobs this weekend.
