Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones hasn’t shut the door on re-signing Anthony Spencer should the defensive end successfully recover from knee surgery.
The Cowboys placed Spencer, 29, on season-ending injured reserve Wednesday after learning he faces major surgery – perhaps even the dreaded microfracture procedure – on his left knee. He’s set to become a free agent after this season, which will end with him having earned roughly $10.6 million after the club placed the franchise tag on him in the offseason.
Spencer had a career-high 11 sacks last season while also leading the team in tackles. It was an effort that led Jones to believe Spencer and DeMarcus Ware could be one of the league’s most dynamic defensive end duos.
“He’s just coming into his own,” Jones told reporters in Irving, “and will be a great complement, if we can go that way, to Ware in the future.”
Jones also said he has no regrets about slapping the franchise tag on Spencer.
“We certainly would like to have those dollars, but I’d rather have Spencer than those dollars,” Jones said. “…If anybody is going to get the money under these circumstances, I’m glad it’s him. He’s worked hard…He’s the consummate pro.”
Jason Garrett agreed.
“He’s a guy we will sorely miss,” the coach said. “He’s been a great leader for our football team, a really productive player, a guy people on our team – players and coaches –look to as an example of how we want to do things. He had a fantastic season last year.”
Spencer’s only action this season came as a sub in Week 2. The Cowboys have started George Selvie, a no-name fifth-year pro who joined the team in training camp after injuries riddled the defensive line, in Spencer’s absence.
“He’s really taken advantage of his opportunity to play,” Garrett said of Selive. “You hear me say this a lot, but he goes about it the right way in meetings and practice, and it shows up in the games.”
Selvie is tied for second on the team in sacks (two) and ranks third in quarterback pressures (five). He also has five tackles, one tackle for loss and one fumble recovery.
“He just has to keep growing in this system, and we expect him to do that,” Garrett said.
Like Jones, Garrett is open to Spencer returning.
“This is the best thing for him going forward,” Garrett said. “We’re fully confident it’s going to be handled the right way and he will be back and there is a lot of football left in him.”
