SAN ANTONIO – Jerry Jones was careful not to tip his hand Sunday regarding the decision that has to be made about defensive end DeMarcus Ware’s future with the Dallas Cowboys.
But on Monday Jones seemed to be leaning in the direction of perhaps letting Ware go.
Ware, 31, is set to count a whopping $16 million against the salary cap, which makes him tough for the cash-strapped Cowboys to afford, especially since he’s no longer playing up to that level.
“There’s no question when you are where we are on the cap, even though we’ve had some new cap space added, and you have a defensive player that’s your highest-paid defensive player, and he hasn’t been on the field much the last two years, that has to be considered,” Jones told ESPN’s SportsCenter, per the Dallas Morning News’s web site.
“You can’t have it all,” the owner added. “We’ve got those kinds of decisions to make, which is a part of what makes it so exciting in the NFL.”
Just as he did Sunday in an interview with beat reporters in Indianapolis, Jones said no decision has made been yet. One option is asking Ware to take a pay cut.
“Those are the ingredients in the stew,” Jones said. “Now we’ve got to stir it up and see where we’re going. It will be a very difficult call for us because of how much salary cap he uses.”
