SAN ANTONIO – Three days after he said he was “disappointed” that his team arrived at the season’s midway point with a 4-4 record, Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones praised the job performance of coach Jason Garrett.

“If I were evaluating the season, looked at it and we’re 4-4, this one’s over, I would look and see how we got to 4-4,” Jones said. “And his arrow would be pointed up.”

The Cowboys’ losses have come by a combined 14 points. They’ve also had to overcome several injuries, including ones that have ravaged the defensive line.

Garrett is 25-23 since replacing Wade Phillips midway through the 2010 season. Since the start of the 2011 season, the Cowboys are 20-20 after two straight 8-8 seasons and this year’s middling start.

Still, Jones likes how Garrett is operating after losing his play-calling duties in the
offseason.

“The key thing about Jason,” Jones told Dallas’ KRLD-FM during his twice-weekly radio show, “is his ability to take things that happened, experiences, he’s had…(and) incorporate that (into) future decisions. We got that going for us.

“I wish everyone could see how hard he works, how conscientious he is, how smart, (the) logical (way) he goes about his business. All of this is good….I give him a good grade, although he, more than me or anybody else, would like it to be better than 4-4.”

On Tuesday, Jones told KRLD-FM he was “disappointed” in the 4-4 start but thought the team could still achieve its goal of reaching the playoffs. Dallas leads the NFC East over Philadelphia (3-5), Washington (2-5) and the New York Giants (2-6).
