SAN ANTONIO – Dallas Cowboys owner Jerry Jones reiterated Friday his belief that the back surgery Tony Romo underwent Dec. 27 won’t sideline him for an extended period.
Jones said the day of the surgery that he believed Romo would be healed in time for the team’s organized team activities in May. In an interview Friday with the team’s flagship radio station, Jones continued to sound an optimistic tone regarding Romo.
“He got the kind of immediate relief you would want him to get,” Jones told Dallas’ KRLD-FM, per the Dallas Morning News. “And, as I’ve said, the nature of his injury and the nature of what it took to repair it was not dramatic. It was not something that would give you concern on a going-forward basis, so all thumbs are up on Tony.”
Romo, who turns 34 in April, also had back surgery in April 2013 to remove a cyst.
Jones wants playoff field expanded: With his team in the midst of a four-year playoff drought, Jones said he favors the NFL expanding the playoff field.
“It just creates that much more excitement and that much more interest for people in those communities,” Jones said.
For the third straight season, the Cowboys missed the playoffs after finishing 8-8 with a loss to a division foe in a do-or-die season finale.
“The fact that you can have a team that might have literally operated at .500 percent or in that area, who half its ball games, you can have that team win the Super Bowl,” Jones said. “That makes a big case for adding a couple more cities or communities that have NFL teams to the playoff mix.”
Extra points: Left tackle Tyron Smith was named to the second-team All-Pro team. Last week, Smith earned his first Pro Bowl berth…Special teams coach Rich Bisaccia interviewed Friday for the Washington Commanders’ head coaching vacancy…Jones declined to comment on reports that defensive line coach Rod Marinelli could be interested in the defensive coordinator job at Tampa Bay, which recently hired Lovie Smith as head coach. Marinelli worked for Smith, when he was head coach at Chicago…In a recent interview with Fox Sports Southwest’s Icon of Coaching, former Cowboys coach Jimmy Johnson said that Jones has told him that he will eventually be installed in the Cowboys’ Ring of Honor.
