INDIANAPOLIS – Jerry Jones can’t help but get emotional whenever he talks about Feb. 25, 1989.
Tuesday will mark the 25th anniversary of his purchase of the Cowboys for $140 million from H.R. “Bum” Bright. He reminisced about it Sunday while chatting with reporters aboard his $2 million bus outside Lucas Oil Stadium at the NFL Scouting Combine.
“It was quite a trying time for me,” Jones said. “I get emotional talking about it and I’ve asked a professional about why I get emotional talking about it in public or private and they said, well, that was a traumatic time for you.
“It was a pretty significant reach risk-wise and I didn’t know how it was going to turn out, so it was a nervous time for me. I developed arrhythmia, and I had never had an unhealthy day in my life. Arrhythmia is called by a lot of people and a lot of med students get it. It was from not resting and never sleeping and then getting up just after you lay your head down. So that kind of describes for me that period of time. It was a time that I felt very off balanced.”
Jones admitted he made missteps early on, including the firing of Tom Landry, the only coach the team had ever had and a two-time Super Bowl champion. Jimmy Johnson replaced the coaching legend and led the Cowboys to Super Bowl wins in 1992 and 1993.
“If I had a chance to do it over again I would’ve waited a year and just got my feet on the ground a little bit more and probably just gone with the staff we had and then later made the ultimate change that I made,” Jones said.
The move angered thousands of fans, some of whom have never forgiven Jones.
It might have been avoided had Jones listened to Bright, who offered to fire Landry before the sale was finalized.
“He did insist that, ‘I should make this change. You shouldn’t. You should have a clean slate. I will make the change,’” Jones said. “I wanted to and felt it was pretty obvious changes were being made because I was taking the team, and I wanted to look coach Landry in the eye, visit with him about that rather than having it done just through the actual purchase closing procedure that would normally come. But that would’ve been something that when I look back at hindsight, I could’ve taken Bum up on his offer to make those changes.”
