DALLAS – Jerry Jones had a severe emotional reaction to seeing quarterback Tony Romo go down late in the first half of Sunday night’s 36-31 win over the Giants.
“My heart stopped,” Jones said Tuesday during his radio show on the Cowboys’ flagship station.
Romo had to leave the game after getting crunched by two Giants pass rushers. He returned at the start of the third quarter and is expected to start at Kansas City in Week 2 after X-rays of his rib area were negative.
“I wanted an immediate reading of where the injury was, was it the shoulder or was it the ribs,” Jones told KRLD-FM. “…I was really relieved when we got to the locker room and the medical people and the doctors were saying he would be able to go and that we were in pretty good shape, nothing compared to the injury he had had a couple of years ago.”
Romo didn’t miss any time during the 2011 season after suffering a fractured rib and a punctured lung in an overtime win at San Francisco in Week 2.
“It was brave” of him to continue playing,” Jones said of Romo, who received a six-year, $108 million extension that included a guaranteed $55 million in the spring.
Jones said he visited with Romo on Monday.
“He’s sore…but we are all planning on him playing in the game,” Jones said.
Two other starters were injured in the opener: wide receiver Dez Bryant (sprained left foot) and cornerback Mo Claiborne (dislocated left shoulder).
Jones indicated X-rays taken on Bryant’s foot Monday were negative.
“At least of last night…he can play,” Jones said.
Regarding Claiborne’s injury, Jones said, “That’s the one we have to keep a real eye on. We’ll probably have to brace that up pretty good, but there is a good chance he’ll go.”
