IRVING – Cowboys owner Jerry Jones heaped praise Tuesday on cornerback Orlando Scandrick, who had one of his best games of his six-year career in Sunday’s 24-21 win over the Giants.
“Ever since he’s walked on campus, he’s played above expectations,” Jones told Dallas’ KRLD-FM on his weekly radio show. “He’s indispensable back there for us.”
Scandrick held Giants star receiver Victor Cruz to just two catches for 27 yards and stripped the ball from him, a takeaway that resulted in safety Jeff Heath grabbing the ball in midair and returning it 50 yards for the game’s first touchdown.
For the season, Scandrick is tied with cornerback Brandon Carr for the team lead in passes defensed with 12. He also is tied with Carr for second in interceptions with two.
Scandrick is fifth on the team in tackles with 48. He also has one sack, one tackle for loss and one forced fumble.
Carr is the only member of the secondary with more tackles than Scandrick.
So does Scandrick think he will earn his first trip to the Pro Bowl?
“I don’t know,” Scandrick said after Sunday’s game. “I want to win. I’m not going to talk my way to the Pro Bowl and (publicize) myself.
“Whatever is going to happen is going to happen, but I’m going to continue to get better. I just need to continue to get my hands on more balls.”
One of the most memorable things about Sunday’s big win in New Jersey was Scandrick’s post-game interview in which he took shots at ESPN’s Mike Ditka for saying before the game that Cruz would be a mismatch for Dallas.
“Isn’t Mike Ditka the guy who traded away all his draft picks (with the Saints) to draft a running back (Ricky Williams)?” Scandrick said.
Coach Jason Garrett loves the boulder-size chip Scandrick always carries on his shoulder.
“Scandrick is one of those guys, that regardless of opponent, that regardless of the place – moon, parking lot, all that stuff – I mean he’ll have a little edge at practice today,” Garrett said Monday. “It will be a walkthrough-type deal. That’s just the way he is and part of what makes him a really good football player.”
