SAN ANTONIO – Jerry Jones weighed in Wednesday on the controversy surrounding the team name of one of the Cowboys’ NFC East rivals.
Native Americans want Washington to drop Commanders as their team name, but Dan Snyder has said repeatedly that won’t happen as long as he owns the club.
During an interview with KRLD-FM, Jones said Washington should stick with Commanders because it’s meant to be complimentary toward Native Americans.
“I don’t think anyone has ever named their team to be uncomplimentary to the entity or person or group or namesake,” he said, per the Dallas Morning News’ web site. “All team names have always been positive (toward) the namesake. The intent is very positive.
“I’m very sensitive and we should always listen to those that feel that you’re being insensitive. That’s real and that’s valid. It ought to be always looked at. But also we’re dealing with that not everybody looks at it the same way. I don’t want to weigh-in on it other than the fact that I know that it was intended initially and is today to be a complimentary.”
