Former Rice and Judson standout Phillip Gaines turned in hand-timed 4.34 seconds in the 40-yard dash at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis on Tuesday. Once the official times came out, he was listed at 4.38, just behind another Texas high school product, Oklahoma State’s Justin Gilbert.
Jason Verrett of TCU gave the state of Texas the top three times, as he was also listed at 4.38.
Gaines was a two-time All-Conference USA player for the Owls, but Pro Football Talk says there are questions about him moving into the first round based on his speed. “He’s a skinny 193-pounder who looks like he needs to add strength, and he has had injury issues in college. He was also suspended for a game last year for violating a team rule. So unlike Gilbert, who’s widely viewed as a first-round pick, Gaines doesn’t necessarily project as a great pro player. He has to hope some team falls in love with his speed.”
